A Piece of Cake: Thirty Years of Marriage….Thirty Years of Cutco

We will celebrate our thirtieth wedding anniversary next month.  It’s hard to believe that our children  are just about the same age  that we were when we got married.    Now our children’s friends are having weddings…and sometimes we are lucky enough to be invited.   Those sweet children who played soccer,  were in our kids’ classes in school,  came to birthday parties and were part of the crazy and fun high school years are marrying their sweethearts now.   We consider an invitation to one of these weddings to be a supreme honor.

There are lots of changes in thirty years.   Styles have changed.  Technology has rebuilt the world as we know it.   Social norms have changed too.  But when we are invited to a wedding,  it takes us back to our own special day.

One of the gifts we received for our wedding was a wonderful set of Cutco knives and cooking tools.  My brother had been a salesman for Cutco while he was in college.   He gave us his entire demonstration set as a  wedding gift.   It was a gift of love;  a gift that would last a lifetime and would be used on a daily basis.   We have used those classic brown knives for thirty years,  and bought the new pearl-white set several years ago.   We’ve added new knives and tools as they were introduced over the years and we enjoy keeping up with the newest innovations in  the Cutco catalog.

Our own children have started collecting Cutco knives.  Every year for Christmas, each one specifies the knife or tool they want next.  They usually ask for the trimmer first.   The cheese knife is popular, as is the ice cream scoop!  The petite chef is one of their favorites too.   This year it will be time to get a knife block for at least one them.

Last summer we all helped with the wedding of our daughter’s best friend, Anna.   We had a wonderful time providing music, helping with decorations and participating in the festivities with her family.   We call her our “daughter” and she calls me “Momma Holtz”.  Special times.  It wasn’t surprising when our daughter mentioned that Anna would love to have some Cutco knives, just like the rest of the family!

My brother had the best idea for a gift thirty years ago.  Those Cutco knives are in the heart of our family kitchen and are the heart of preparing our family meals.   They are a bridge to the next generation and will be in the heart of our children’s lives.  It only makes sense that Cutco knives would be the best wedding gift for the special young people who include us in their special day.
