You Are My Sunshine, My Only Sunshine

“You make me happy, when skies are gray!”  One of my all-time favorite songs!

Today I’m humming about the sunshine that broke through the clouds on an unusually  gray-sky day this week.

The nicest thing about this sunshine is that five of us are sharing it!

I was honored  when Gigi,  author of Gluten Free Gigi, chose me as one of five website authors in her Sunshine Award selections.   I met Gigi on Twitter, and last SeptemberGigi came to visit the ranch, before I had even started my blog!   Gigi is one inspirational person,  teacher and blogger herself… and it’s especially humbling for a new blogger like me to be recognized in this way.  Thank you, sweet Gigi, for this award!

The Sunshine Award is given by bloggers to other bloggers who positively and creatively inspire others in the blogosphere, the interconnected community of website authors.

Here’s how the award works:
1. Recipients thank the person who gave them the award and link back to them.

It is my pleasure to introduce you to Gigi at Gluten Free Gigi!  She is a mom, chef, scientist, teacher,  sweet person,  loyal friend…and she is generous in sharing her knowledge.  She has  personal experience in the healing effects of diet, and shares her story as well as her vast knowledge of nutrition and food science through speaking and writing.  Be sure to thoroughly check out her site…I guarantee that she is unique  and genuine.

2. Recipients answer the following 10 questions about themselves.
These are random facts that aren’t easy to answer, at least, for me!  I don’t settle on one option easily, but here goes anyway!

Favorite Color: It depends on the day.  Lately it has been hot pink.
Favorite Animal:  Cindy Lou is my gorgeous gray cat with green eyes who loves to carry on a conversation and will interrupt the writing of a brilliant blog post with insistent requests for attention.
Favorite Number: 12
Favorite Drink:   Do you mean a drink during the day, or a fun drink in the evening?  Or first thing in the morning?  I love my coffee in the morning…The Farmer brews it and brings it to me first thing.  During the day I like water or iced pomegranate green tea.  In the evening I prefer red wine.
Facebook or Twitter: I enjoy them both, especially when I can connect with old friends and meet new ones.  Love seeing everyone’s photos!
Good Movie or Good Book: We rarely go to the movies,  but enjoy them on  television quite often.  I do prefer books though.
My passion:  Discovering new people,  new experiences, new recipes and products, new places and new inspiration so I can share those stories.
Giving or Getting presents:  Giving.  I love the process of thinking about the person and waiting for an idea that will lead to a gift that they may not have even known they would like.
Favorite Day of the Year:   The first day of vacation!  I love the feeling of freedom from routine and the anticipation of fun!
Favorite Flower:  When I was three years old, my grandmother told me that “our favorite flower” was pansy because pansies look like little girls’ faces.  I can honestly say that I don’t have one favorite flower now…but I especially love spring wild flowers.

3. Recipients select 10 (yes ten!)  of their favorite bloggers, link to those blogs, then let them know they have been awarded the Sunshine Award!

Now this is a challenge.    I’m going to follow Gigi’s lead and  introduce you to only five of my favorites, all of whom I have met personally.  And they all  write about avocados too.  Here goes:

La Fuji Mama by Rachael Hutchings –  Rachael shares recipes and adventures that bring world flavors to the family dinner table.  She does have some gluten-free recipes on her site, and right now I’ll link you to her Avocado Honey Ice Cream that doesn’t even require an ice cream maker to prepare!  She is my “Avocado Sister”, as we live within driving distance of each other and often share adventures.  You will love her family and especially her creative recipes!

Learning To Eat Allergen Free by Colette Martin- I met Colette last August at BlogHer’11 in San Diego.  Her book,  Learning to Bake Allergen-Free has just come out,  and yesterday she was here at the ranch to sign my copy!  Be sure to visit her site and read her inspiring story.  I was delighted to meet her family and spend the the day with them,  exploring the avocado ranch and visiting some local wineries.  You can look forward to more allergen-free recipes using avocados.  Try her Avocado Salad Dressing!  We look forward to meeting up at BlogHer’12 in NYC in a few weeks…if you’re going, look us up!

Sushi Day  by Allison Day – Allison is a lifelong dancer,  computer code writer,  creative thinker and lover of Japanese food.  She and Rachael have a podcast called Miso Hungry.  In fact, Allison and Rachael spent some time together in Japan recently.   Allison introduced me to the Sushi Burger too!  Her blog includes recipes, tutorials, restaurant reviews and always a good dose of her sparkling personality!  You will love her.  Here’s one of her entertaining posts with a recipe for Scallops wtih Polenta and Avocado.

The Healthy Voyager by Carolyn Scott-Hamilton – Carolyn has one of the most amazing educational backgrounds of anyone I have ever met.  Check it out here.   Her blog is a one-stop shop for health and wellness information,  recipes including vegan and gluten-free,  travel stories,  products to try,  gardening tips…she even has her own TV show and video clips on her Facebook page.   She will help you incorporate healthier habits into your life.  If you’re looking for solid information presented in a positive, can-do way,  check out Carolyn’s blog.  Here’s one of her typically creative recipes including avocados,  Mexi-Asian Style Chickpea Tartare.

Budget Gourmet Mom by Krista Dearden –  In the small-world category,  Krista actually grew up and went to school with Rachael of La Fuji Mama,  but now lives in Utah with her husband and four boys where they raise cattle.  I get a kick out of her posts and her sense of humor, having raised 4 children on a farm myself!  You will love her down-to-earth approach to life, her practical advice and her delicious recipes with gorgeous photographs.   She knows how to stretch her food budget too. Check out her avocado appetizers!
