Springtime: Avocado Flowers, Hummingbirds, and Baby Avocados

April is the month when everything happens at once in the avocado grove. Farmers  begin to harvest  the crop that has been growing for the past year on the trees.   The avocado trees are in full bloom and baby avocados are beginning to appear.  The constant humming of bees in the trees as they pollenate the flowers can be loud,  and humming birds are flitting around too!  See the little guy sitting high up in the tree?

California Avocados Direct 2014 Season Opener

Spring has arrived here in Southern California, and that means it’s time to begin picking the avocados!   The biggest avocados will be selected and harvested now to make room for the new babies to begin growing.   The trees are already blooming, as you can see the shaggy yellow blossoms which make the trees look much lighter in color than the dark green leaves that are usually visible.

wildflower-gardenAfter a long, dry winter we finally had some rain two weeks ago.  Now the wild flowers are blooming!  Without rain, the ground stays brown.

new-growthWhen the buds for the blossoms begin to grow,  the tree also starts to put out some new leaves.  I like to think of those new reddish leaves as little umbrellas that will grow bigger and shade the new avocados from the sun.

blossomHere is the first flower opening!  They look like tiny yellow stars.  Did you know that avocado flowers are male or female when they first open,  and on the next day when they open again they are opposite?  Some flowers open male at first and then change to female.  Others start out female and open again as male.  Isn’t nature fascinating!

avocado-with-budsThe mature avocados have been growing for a whole year, and are still on the tree when the tree begins to bloom.  Now is the time to begin picking the largest avocados so the tree will have energy to make the smaller avocados grow bigger, as well as set new fruit for next year.

Flowers in February: Some Will Be Fruit!

ranchbluesky  Does this look like winter to you?  Sunny blue skies and warm daytime temperatures are not exactly what we hope for during the winter months.   Visitors from the cold, snowy states love our February beach weather, but we’re wishing for rain.  Farmers have no choice but to keep irrigating daily, knowing that the cost of water could eliminate any hope of making a good living this year.   With the warm weather, avocado trees are beginning an early bloom.

Even the youngest avocado trees think it’s time to bloom!  This baby tree was planted last summer, and already the flowers appearing. The fruit that sets with these flowers will not be ready to pick until 2015.

Avocados are not the only blooming trees and plants.  Today I took a walk around the ranch taking photos to share with you! Continue reading

End of March…Finding Flowers in the Avocado Grove

new growth on avocado trees

New red leaves appear as the trees begin to bud!

March is one of my favorite times of year in the avocado grove.  The trees begin to sprout beautiful new growth in tones of red and pink.   As the new leaves sprout, the buds of the avocado flowers begin to appear too!

avocado flower buds

The buds grow faster than the new leaves!

As the buds grow bigger and begin to open,  the trees begin to look shaggy with the spindly flowers making a splash of light lemon-lime color on the hillsides.

Instead of fall colors, we have Spring Colors in the avocado grove!

The tiny flowers begin to open, one by one.

The first flower has opened!

Like tiny stars,  each flower has the potential to become an avocado!  But not every flower will be pollinated, or will have the chance to develop into a fruit.

bees pollinate avocado flowers

This bee has found the open flowers!

As the flowers open,  the avocado trees become a busy place, with bees gathering nectar.    The sound of bees buzzing in the trees is quite loud!  Humming, buzzing….bees!    They aren’t paying attention to people…only to the flowers!

Some trees are in full bloom while others are just beginning to open.

Some trees begin to bloom early,  while others take more time.  The new leaves continue to grow so they will be able to shade the new baby avocados from the warm springtime sun!

Have you heard about avocado flowers? They are female one day and male the next!

If you haven’t heard the story of avocado flowers,  check out the post about Where Baby Avocados Come From!  It’s a fascinating story! Flowers that can be male one day and female the next!

mature avocados are ready to pick!

Low-hanging fruit!

At the same time,  the new crop of avocados is mature and sizing up!   It’s time to pick those beauties so that the tree will have energy to set the new fruit and allow them to begin to grow!   This year’s crop is on the tree at the same time that next year’s crop is getting started.
