Does A Bacon Avocado Taste Like Bacon? And a Giveaway!

Whenever the subject of Bacon avocados comes up  the first question is always “Does a Bacon avocado taste like bacon?”

Bacon avocados are named for Mr. James Bacon, who hybridized them in 1954.   This year is the 60th birthday of the Bacon avocado!  That’s plenty of reason to celebrate with a big bowl of guacamole made with Bacon avocados!

Bacon avocado trees are found as far north as the Bay Area of California because this variety of avocado tree can tolerate cooler weather.  According to Gary Bender of UC Cooperative Extension,

“Bacon is mostly Mexican  with even more cold tolerant than Fuerte. As a rule of thumb, Hass fruit can stand temperatures as low as 29°F for four hours before showing freeze damage in the fruit, Fuerte fruit can similarly withstand temperatures to 26-27°F before showing damage, and Bacon can withstand temperatures as low as 25°F before showing fruit damage.”

The Bacon variety is one of  the very first of the California avocado varieties to be harvested each year.  These California avocados are the ones to eat in November and December.   Bacons have thinner skin and are considered one of the “green skin” avocados.   They’re ripe when they just “give” when gently pressed in the palm of your hand.  They do not turn black when they’re ripe, so it’s important to actually touch the fruit to check if they’re softening.   Avocados are very hard when they are first picked from the tree, and it takes a week or more to soften up so they can be eaten.

So how does a Bacon avocado taste?  I’d love for you to try some and tell me what you think.  This morning I had a conversation with The Farmer and Farmer Ben here in the kitchen.  We all agreed that Bacons are lighter than other varieties, have a very fresh and unique flavor,  and they’re especially good in guacamole, salads, or smoothies.  They certainly are a very pretty fruit, wouldn’t you agree?

This Bacon avocado  is ready to eat.  The color of the fruit is light yellow with a little green near the skin, and the texture is light too.    As you can see, the skin is green,  peels easily, and is much thinner than Hass or Reed avocados.  Bacon avocados season lasts only a few months in November/December.

box of Bacon avocadosBacon avocados are  not usually found in grocery  stores, unless you happen to live in Southern California where local produce is available at Farmers Markets or local produce stands.  If you want to try Bacon avocados,  we will  ship some to you,   direct from our farm.  We pick them from the trees and pack them right away while they’re still very hard.  The avocados are nestled in wood excelsior, packed in special double boxes.  They come with a Ripening and Storage Guide that describes how to care for your fresh avocados and how to know when they’re ready to eat.  This week we started offering a gift box of 7 Bacon avocados…the first time this year!

Here you can see the Bacon avocados on the left,  Hass avocados in the middle, and Fuerte avocados on the right.  Hass are easy to identify because of the bumpy skin.  Fuerte avocados are shaped like pears.

  1. If you harvest Bacons in November or December, they are not very good, very low fat content, and not much flavor, watery. But if you leave them on the tree until April- June, they are excellent.

    • I agree, although I think the December fruit is pretty good. Unfortunately, there are other issues with leaving the fruit on the tree until Spring, the biggest being that some will fall from the tree, and in some cases they will get overripe, with the seed drawing away from the fruit (leaving a hollow area inside that doesn’t improve quality) and, I fear, by leaving too many fruit on the tree past February you will cut into the flowering of the tree, resulting in a very small harvest the next season. This last comment is only my theory, and I do recommend leaving a few fruit (especially on the shady side of the tree) as long as possible. There’s nothing like a bowl of Bacon avocado guacamole for Cinco de Mayo!

  2. Last year we lost our entire crop (which was only about 20) in December because they happened to ripen during a two week period when we were extremely ill. Found them smashed all over the ground. :(. This year we had a bumper crop of approximately 110. We started picking end of November and giving away. Today 12/20, we found one smashed on the ground. We decided to pick the rest so as not to loose anymore. All of them that were picked a various times were delicious.

    • Sometimes the fruit falls after an unexpected heat spell, or with Santa Ana winds. Glad you have enjoyed more of your crop this year!

      • Thanks Mimi! And so has a lot of our friends and family! Just wish shipping did not cost so much! LOL

        Also, do you anything about all the immature avocados we have on our tree? Quite a lot this year. Will they mature and ripen? They are about 2″ long and 1.5″ wide. Thanks for any info!

    • Our 25 year old Bacon has had 300-400 fruit this year (after an “other” year the last with maybe 25.) We’ve given away about 150, and with the tree still loaded we will give away many more, but try to keep fruit on the tree right through April. Leave the well-shaded and north side fruit unpicked and you can still enjoy these at Cinco de Mayo. Lot of good things about a Bacon, the alternating heavy-light years being its big defect.

  3. Thanks for the info Scott! We were so afraid more would die a horrific death. So saddening to see them smashed all over the ground. Also, did not know that heavy-light years was a characteristic of the Bacon. We always thought it was not enough water, pollination or something like that. We live in the central valley of CA. Our tree is about 15 years old. I asked Mimi above about the underdeveloped fruit on the tree. Do you happen to know anything about those? Thanks for reply!

Hi June: I’m not sure this will help, as I can’t see your underdeveloped fruit, but the very first year we lived at our house in Torrance – about eighteen years ago – our much younger Bacon tree had what my grandpa called “cukes”, which are off-blooms that are shaped like cucumbers. (The dimensions of the fruit you have would seem pretty similar.) Cukes are pretty common on Fuerte, and when I saw them on the Bacon (a tree I didn’t know from my childhood days in Fallbrook) I was super happy, though cukes aren’t particulary good to eat, as I recall. I just liked them because they were unusual, and I remembered seeing them often as a kid. However, we have never had any cukes since that first year, and I have no idea why. Please let me know if yours turn out to be good! (Also, note: we got thrips on some of our fruit – maybe five percent – this year, so watch out for them in the future.) SB

  5. I find the best time for the Bacon avocados are RIGHT NOW! Which means mid-February to beginning of March. Yours truly, my 3-story tree in my backyard, San Jose, CA.
