We have a lot of hummingbirds this time of year. I don’t know if they’re migrating or if they spend their winters nearby. Some of them even nest in our avocado trees. They seem to know that they will be well fed if they show up at our kitchen window.
The Farmer is not all that fond of having house-pets. For a guy who isn’t an animal-person, he sure loves the hummingbirds! He dissolves sugar in water and cooks up a batch of nectar several times a week to make sure their feeder never stays empty. Sometimes our pantry is out of sugar because it has all been fed to the birds!
The tiny birds gather in the Fuerte avocado trees near the house and take turns flying back and forth to the feeders. I have planted Buddleia bushes between the trees and the window…dark purple, a reddish one, and a bush with yellow flowers. Hummingbirds love Buddleaia!
Watching those little darlings flitting around and enjoying their nectar is relaxing and exciting at the same time. It’s hard to walk away from the window, they’re so appealing! Once in a while a bird will try to drive away some of the others, but for the most part they get along.
Here’s a short video of the pretty little hummingbirds, taken with my IPhone about 5:30 pm on March 2, 2012.
Do you have hummingbird feeders near your house? Have you ever seen a hummingbird nest?
